Before we change a single switch setting, we walk a five-point checklist. Most “Wi-Fi is slow” tickets turn out to be something on this list — and fixing it is cheaper than new hardware.
1. What is actually online?
Map every ISP line, router and switch. Note which rooms drop offline when the primary link dies. If nobody wrote this down last year, today is a good day.
2. Patch and power hygiene
Loose RJ45 plugs, overloaded power strips and UPS batteries past their date create random blips that look like software bugs.
3. Guest versus office Wi-Fi
Separate guest SSIDs keep visitors off shared drives and biometric ports. Use strong unique passwords — not the company name plus a year.
4. VPN and remote staff
If people work from home or another unit, confirm who has VPN access, MFA where possible, and split-tunnelling rules that match your risk comfort.
5. Document once, update after every change
A one-page sketch with IP ranges and admin credentials (stored safely) saves hours when Digitech or your own staff return for AMC.
